About Ferndale Laboratories

Beginnings

Founded in 1897 as the J.F. Hartz Company, Ferndale Laboratories originally served the medical profession by providing surgical instruments imported from Germany and offered a complete line of doctors' supplies, equipment, lab reagents and pharmaceutical products. As a forerunner in "home health care," the storefront of this multi-storied, brick building (still located in downtown Detroit) served the public as a retail source of vitamins, tonics, and elixirs.

Moving with the Times

Medical technology brought rapid and significant advancements, challenging the company to meet the changing needs of the medical community. In October 1950, the J.F Hartz Company moved to its present location in Ferndale, Michigan. Its focus then shifted to serving Michigan doctors and hospitals through surgical and pharmaceutical divisions. A few years later, the name was changed to Ferndale Surgical and Laboratories, and then was changed once again to Ferndale Laboratories, Inc. (FLI) as it is now.

A Significant Business Shift

Perhaps the most important decision in determining the destiny of Ferndale Laboratories, Inc. was made in the Fall of 1975. At that time, Ferndale Laboratories, Inc. embarked on a mission to grow from a local pharmaceutical manufacturer to a company with national recognition.

By creating an inside sales force in 1975, Ferndale Laboratories, Inc. was one of the first pharmaceutical companies to reach out to the marketplace with telemarketers. To further support Ferndale Laboratories' goal to establish itself as a nationwide corporation, a powerful outside sales force was implemented in 1996, working in conjunction with the inside sales representatives. The synergy created between these two groups assisted Ferndale Laboratories in reaching the national marketplace and achieving exponential growth.

Ferndale Laboratories, Inc. has over 100,000 square feet of manufacturing, warehouse and office space dedicated to achieving the latest technological advances in the manufacturing of healthcare products.
